Abstract

The University of Northern Iowa's Youth Leadership Studies program has established a new support base to education for youth service organization careers. Commitment to the challenges and opportunities of the program is extremely high throughout the University among students, faculty, and administration One of the key challenges to the program is to conduct an annual national symposium on important issues to the profession. The Symposium is an annual working conference of youth service related professionals that focuses on solving practical problems of the emerging profession through continuing sequences of study and development. The experience of students, faculty, and practitioners from the academic institutions and youth serving organizations is brought to bear on the purposes of the Symposium: To serve as an agency of change by raising questions, examining circumstances, making decisions and taking actions that realize the common ground and agreement needed to contribute to the profession. It builds on the unique traditions, missions, and services of each organization, while cutting across the boundaries of divisions and differences that may limit efforts.
