Abstract

The concept of the "rhetorical act" has been used by contemporary theorists and critics to generate new insights into rhetoric. This paper considers how Chaim Perelman's "new rhetoric" employs the concept of act to illuminate speaker-speech-audience relationships, and, in turn, how Perelman's theory is clarified by reference to this paradigm.
