Abstract
The majority of debate and forensic coaches in Iowa along with the rest of the nation have always been faced with a variety of internal and external problems that pose definite threats to the scope and existence of their programs. These have often been problems that force us to constantly re-evaluate, revise, and rebuild our respective co-curricular programs. Although most of the articles in our journals have been primarily concerned with the plight of our forensic programs at the college level, forensic programs in our secondary schools are faced with many of the same problems. Recent educational trends in such areas as accountability and competency-based education at the secondary level, however, have placed additional, and perhaps more serious, burdens on all of us. These trends, combined with the very real economic problems of the mid-1970's, are forcing administrators and educators to take another, closer look at all curricular and co-curricular school programs.
