Abstract
This critical essay traces the evolutions of and changes in higher education as a context for discussing the future of the discipline of communication. Some of the strengths and limitations of the 1975-2010 era, identified by Geiger (1995/2011) as the "Privatization and Current Era" in higher education, are detailed with special attention given to the increasing, if not unique, support of corporate organizations in funding and defining the agenda of higher education research during this era. This analysis functions as context for isolating teaching as a key component of the future of undergraduate communication higher education in the 2011-2036 era.
