Abstract
The year is 1973, over forty years ago. [Deep voice intoning] Nobody has ever heard of "relational communication." There is no field of "relationship research." In fact there are only two books with the words ''personal relationships" together in the title in the whole of the social sciences. Some scholars research marriage and family, mostly from a department of Sociology or perhaps Home Economics. Some psychologists have studied attraction and run into storms of criticism about the use of a laboratory method to do so (Byrne, 1971). Not one single article with personal relationships in the title has ever been published in a Communication-based journal ....
