Abstract
At the University of Northern Iowa I teach a course titled Introduction to Communication. Part of the course description reads "the purpose of this course is to provide you with an overview of the field of communications studies, to understand your role in community, the role of research and theory in communication and to explore the career paths you may choose. We want you to be able to better understand why you are choosing communication for a field of study during your time at UNI." The course meets three times a week for five weeks. For a final assignment, I asked my students to defend their major. "You are in a heated debate with a friend who informs you that you are in a 'worthless major that anyone can do. There is no substance or justification for its place in academia and it has no value to a well-educated person.' In a 2 -2 ½ page paper, create an answer for your friend. Be specific with your rebuttal and justify your answers with facts and background form the information you have acquired from Boxing Plato's Shadow and information shared in this class. You have enough information at your disposal to create a solid, reliable argument to blow his or her opinion out of the water!"
