Abstract
Goal: To stimulate awareness of how interpersonal needs are communicated across different types of relationships.
According to Knapp and Vangelisti (2000), interpersonal needs are an important factor in understanding and/or affecting the development, maintenance, and deterioration of relationships. Three primary needs - control, affection, and inclusion - shape an individual's communication behaviors and play a central role in determining an individual's expectations of a relationship. Four additional needs-physical, social, practical and identity - also facilitate an understanding of an individual's physical and emotional well-being (Adler & Rodman, 1999; Verderber, 2001). How these needs and others are communicated depends on the particular relationship.
