Abstract

This essay examines the Vietnam War POW/MIA myth, the belief in the existence of living, breathing Americans soldiers still held captive in the remote jungles of Southeast Asia. This essay takes the position that the Vietnam War POW/MIA myth is not the sole product of a slick and manipulative U.S. government public relations campaign; rather, this contemporary myth finds its origin in the American monomyth, a long-standing cultural narrative.
