Abstract
Using data gathered through participant observation and interviewing, this paper discusses the narrative performances of identity presented when one verbally discusses their written work. Three categories of narratives are presented: narratives that identify autobiographical elements; narratives that relate shared experiences and; narratives that describe the writing process. Several identity constructing functions of each of these narratives are presented. The paper ends with a discussion of how written communication may be viewed as a dress rehearsal for an upcoming verbal performance of identity.
