Abstract
Iowa has a strong tradition of supporting the arts in its school systems. This can be seen in the theatre programs that enable thousands of secondary students to participate in competitions, musicals and plays. In their study of the status of speech and theatre education in Iowa's high schools, Erbert and Trank report that their data revealed that there continues to be "strong participation in speech and theatre programs statewide" and that there is "strong support for speech and theatre programs by school administration" (29). This support continues into Iowa's community colleges as can be seen from the fact that fifteen of Iowa's nineteen community colleges offer some type of theatre courses. This study examines theatre courses and extracurricular activities being currently offered at Iowa's two-year institutions. These findings are then compared to the results of a study of community theatre programs completed fifteen years ago. Basic information for this study was obtained from the institutions' general catalogs and compiled in Spring 1997. This information was confirmed through selected phone interviews and written correspondence with theatre instructors, individuals in admissions offices, and students.
