Abstract
Scientific theories are used primarily to predict and control. In that regard interpersonal theories are not very useful if applied to interpersonal relationships. But theories are also used to evaluate, describe, explain, and understand (Cragan & Shields, 1998). The learning project I describe is designed for students of interpersonal communication as they learn to use and apply interpersonal theories to their everyday relational interactions. The learning project consists of three components. 1. Students are asked to identify and describe an interpersonal communication problem. The problem is analyzed using interpersonal theories and a prescription/solution based in theory is also developed. 2. An oral presentation of the project is shared in class with time for feedback and peer discussion. 3. A formal paper based on the project is submitted after the oral presentation and is evaluated by the instructor.
