Abstract
Students enrolling in communication classes are often not aware of the speech communication tradition. Do students expect to learn marketable communication skills or do they hope to gain a solid understanding of the discipline? Students in two types of basic communication courses responded to an expectations measure. Results show that students expected to learn communication skills and applications, not theoretical issues. Accuracy of expectations as they reflect communication instruction is discussed, and recommendations to communication educators are made.
