Abstract
Fred Antczak's essay proposes to address two major themes in contemporary university life; the tension between teaching and research and the problems and prospects of taking the improvement of teaching seriously. Along the way his essay is sprinkled with nuggets of practical wisdom and university lore from one who clearly knows the academy well. Antczak speaks with authority--his is the voice of one who has been around the university quad many times. His repeated injunction "do no harm" is a prudent and timely reminder to those eager to believe that there is an administrative answer to every question.
