Abstract

Since the Fall 1994 Iowa Journal of Communication was published, a number of additional communication departments (as well as schools or colleges of communication) have come under fire, and are targeted for elimination. The University of Washington School of Mass Communication and Department of Communication were among the first targeted by the administration in the face of a $12 million shortfall. Hearings and meetings continue on their fate. Some of us may already have been called upon to write letters in their behalf. This particular targeted cut comes as a direct result of Initiative 601, passed by Washington state voters last November. Initiative 601 mandates a lid on public spending. The administrators in Seattle who identified Mass Communication and Communication as areas that could most readily be eliminated cited three reasons: (1) lack of centrality to the mission of the institution, (2) the need for excellence in teaching, and (3) cost. Ironically, in the last ten years, six faculty members from the affected college and department have been recipients of the university's distinguished teaching awards, and the department has one of the highest FTE's in the university.
