Abstract

One particularly ironic paradox of contemporary American society is that one of the most successful rhetorical strategies for silencing a voice is to celebrate that voice. The celebrator becomes a (mis)interpreter whose message is louder, and more widely received, than the original. In this essay I will argue that this is precisely what happened to the voices and concerns of women in the 1992 United States presidential campaign.
