Abstract
John Marshall (1755-1835) was the first great Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1801-1835) and the author of a number of landmark decisions that are eloquent and classic statements of republican political principles, a written Constitution deriving its authority from popular sovereignty, and the plain politics of the supremacy of the Union over and above State governments.
