Abstract

This statement reveals the underlying optimism which characterizes Mary Church Terrell's philosophy of social relations. Ironically, her vociferous criticisms of the unjust treatment accorded Afro-Americans often eclipsed her optimistic sentiments. Between 1892 and 1954 she used her significant oratorical and writing talents to decry oppressive racial practices in the United States, and to promote pride and self-respect among Afro-Americans.1
