Abstract
Victoria was purposefully conceived to be monarch of Britain. In 1817, when the Prince Regent's only child died, it became apparent that not one of George III's twelve children had succeeded in producing a legitimate heir. Accordingly, the Duke of Kent, an insignificant fourth son then aged 50, cast off his longtime French mistress and married a proven breeder. His bride, a Princess of Saxe-Coburg, was a healthy widow and mother. Their issue, Victoria, was born on May 24, 1819; and the father, having done his reproductive duty, died eight months later.
