Abstract

Mary Todd Lincoln was above all, Mrs. President Abraham Lincoln. As the wife of the speaker, Mrs. Lincoln had a unique perspective; more than any of Abraham's contemporaries, Mary had the advantage of knowing her husband's private feelings on the day he publicly delivered his "few remarks" at Gettysburg. Viewing the occasion through Mary's eyes reveals the immediate personal context of Abraham's speech.
