Abstract
Twenty-eight years ago, nearly to the day, I stood in Sam Becker's office as a callow youth in dire need of some research funds to prepare the stimulus materials--now there's a phrase I haven't written for 15 years--for my dissertation. Sam listened, picked up the phone and negotiated $300 out of the University's research chair as I stood there. Admittedly, those were simpler times--nowadays he would have reached voice mail. Nonetheless, I was impressed. It was a lesson in finding ways to say "Yes, now" to people trying to do their job.
