Abstract

The observations which follow evolved from a study of speeches given by contemporary American women leaders. In conducting this study, the author was supported by a grant from the University of Northern Iowa. The speakers' selection of language was a primary focus of this study, and some important differences were found when comparing speakers' prepared texts with their spontaneous insertions and omissions. The differences are particularly noticeable in the language of Barbara Bush.
