Abstract
With the essay "The Case for the Right to Reply," the author enters into the important and captious debate over what to do about "hate speech," specifically on college campuses. As a former Affirmative Action Officer for the Speech Communication Association and as organizer and chair of a recent SCA panel on this very subject, I am in sympathy with the undertaking. There is the persistent notion among well-meaning people that "hate speech," as indicated by its designation, is sui generis and, considered as such, is eligible for special treatment.
