Abstract

Sometimes our light goes out but is blown again into flame by an encounter with another human being. Each of us owes the deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this inner light. (Albert Schweitzer) Most teachers would recognize a desire to be one of those who blow again into flame the inner light of our students. Amid all the calls for educational reform, teacher accountability and increased achievement, how is the inner light of the teacher to remain kindled?

School districts do not do enough to encourage and reward the innovation and risk-taking necessary to be a literate, growing educator.
