Abstract

When a young child begins to learn to eat with utensils, the careful teacher supplies the youngster with blunt, flexible forks (safe tines) with which to practice the tasks of capturing, transporting and depositing food. These tools allow the learning child to work independently, creatively and safely, providing a means for nourishment while minimizing the danger of injury.

The careful teacher of rhetorical criticism will also find safe tines useful. In this case, "safe tines" refer to flexible critical constructs with which the learner may practice the tasks of interpreting, evaluating and responding to discourse. These tools allow the learner to work independently, creatively and safely, providing nourishment through a structure that is navigable, comprehensive and focused.
