Abstract
We claim for communication many purposes and many forms. Moreover, we so generally assume that communication is positive that we seem anxious to describe negative communication as a failure to communicate. At the same time, we may say communication is negative if we think of it as manipulative. Most of us who teach and theorize about communication are wont to project the notion that communication is interactive, involving a sender, a message and a receiver. This last characterization makes it handy for us to focus our attention on any of the many examples of one or more of these three elements in order to study and teach the total behavior we call communication.
