Abstract
The previous article describes the need for oral communication across the curriculum and raises justified concerns about quality control. Possibly those who plan future approaches can benefit from the experience and example of a proven program.
The Central College Approach: In 1975, an "across the curriculum" program was initiated at Central College in Pella, Iowa, which incorporated reading, writing, and speaking assignments into most classes. An ad hoc committee directed the program for several years until Central College received a National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) grant to expand the program and help develop expertise in teaching these three communication skills. 1 Month-long summer workshops were conducted for faculty from all departments.
