Abstract
Objectives: To encourage research during the preparation of speeches and the choice of substantive issues as topics for speeches. To lay the framework for later consideration of communication concepts, including the nature of symbolic communication, the possibility of distortion in messages, and the ethical responsibilities of communicators.
