Abstract
The Iowa High School Speech Association, in attempting to uphold "good taste," has set itself up as a censorship panel by implementing rules concerning the depiction of tobacco smoking, drinking, and the use of profanity or ''publicly offensive'' themes.in dramatic contests, and that disqualify "controversial and objectionable material" in book review, speech, and debate contests. It has been almost two centuries since the states declared that ''Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech,'' yet we still face situations where well-meaning, but misguided, censors. attempt to ban materials because someone may not like the language contained therein, or because someone may be offended by the activities depicted, or because someone may be frightened by the ideas they contain.
