Abstract

The Iowa High School Speech Association has for many years had a section in the constitution called "Coaching Ethics.” The ethics section includes items such as plagiarism, student participation, royalties, and student instruction. Rule 11 also asserts the association's position on materials and actions which may be found offensive. In the summer of 1985, IHSSA made a very slight change in Rule 11. Previously, the rule stated that ''violations may result in disqualification.'' The new rule states, ''violations will result in disqualification.'' This slight change from "may" to "will" caused great consternation among a few people who saw the new association effort as censorship. Never has the association attempted to precensor material or suggest that specific material is not suitable. Such decisions have been left up to the coach who must weigh the importance of material choice against the possible consequences of being judged offensive.
