Abstract

Despite nearly thirty years of development, social movement theory in the field of communication is not significantly different than it is in other fields. Communication, or rhetoric, borrows theory primarily from two other areas: history and structural sociology. A traditional historical approach results in a description of the situation and sees the situation as determinant of human action. The structural sociological approach creates an examination of the hierarchical development of the movement and its response to felt needs as determining human behavior. Some sociologists also look at a movement's developmental stages in an attempt to trace a movement's growth.
