Abstract
Communication competence is becoming a topic of increased interest. Much of this interest stems from a desire to delineate those skills that should be emphasized in speech communication education of children that will benefit them the most. The constellation of skills is often lumped into the category called communication competence. This interest is justified when one considers the importance that communication is playing in today's society. The United States is known as a melting pot of cultures, and it is likely that the average American will meet and interact with a variety of people. The greater the likelihood of having to interact with many types of people, the greater the need for being communicatively adaptable, and flexible, of having communication competence.
