Abstract
All through high school and college the hidden truth that "speech lacks credibility as an intrinsically valuable discipline" escaped me. Only after I graduated with a speech major, public speaking emphasis, and found my first teaching job did reality hit. I overheard my new colleague, who, incidentally, coaches oral interpretation, say, "Why did they hire someone with a nothing major like that?" In the seven years of teaching that followed, I realized "speech" lacks credibility throughout the state of Iowa. Here, as elsewhere, administrators can't be convinced to incorporate speech as a requirement in addition to the standard writing and literature requirements. Here, as elsewhere, a high school speech department is rare, although several one-person art, foreign language or home economics departments are present.
