Abstract
''What?" "What did you say?" "I wasn't ready. What's that; again?" "Huh?" "I couldn't get it all down. Would you repeat that please?" Repeat! Repeat! Repeat! My beginning attempts at teaching students how to listen came about as a result of my frustration with frequent responses like those above. I believe my students were also feeling frustration. They needed help- my help! I knew there had to be a way to improve listening behaviors, but I lacked the knowledge and skill needed to resolve the problem. I read everything I could find on the subject of listening and began to develop a unit to try to help my students become better listeners. My first efforts were haphazard, but it was a beginning. I had to know more about listening as a skill and how to teach it.
