Abstract
The use of student evaluation of faculty is commonplace in post-secondary speech communication programs across the country. Although research on rating scales for such evaluation has been a topic of concern in educational journals for over fifty years, communication journals have generally avoided such discussions until the early part of this decade. Wolff reported in 1974 that 90.5 per cent of the speech departments surveyed conducted such evaluations and all but one of the remaining respondents had plans to use them in the near future. While we, as a discipline, have not been actively involved in the research surrounding student evaluation, it is obvious that most speech communication instructors do attempt to elicit some sort of systematic feedback regarding instruction from their students.
