Abstract

As the "back to basics" movement continues to dominate both secondary and higher education, those of us who teach communication must be ready to justify our field and methods and/or to offer new, but intellectually and educationally sound, alternatives to present practice. In this paper I argue that the basic course, on the college if not on the high school level, should be a course in communication (rhetoric) rather than a course in either speaking or writing.
