Abstract
Communication is a key factor in any transaction for children or for adults. Because breakdowns in communication so easily occur, it becomes necessary for teachers to help students of all ages develop competence in the skill of communicating. A competent communicator not only knows the rules of language structure, but also knows how to use language as a tool in everyday situations, and can weigh the different factors of a communication situation and process that information to produce an appropriate response. If this is the desired outcome, the teacher must ask how to achieve it. Barbara Wood has provided classroom teachers with two booklets to explain what must be done to develop communication competence in children of preschool age through high school age.
