Abstract
For the last five years each winter quarter I have been guest for a day in our Methods of Teaching Speech class. I have never quite decided the real reason for my annual appearance. The invitation is always issued under the guise of my talking about tournament administration or “will I say a word or two about professional organizations?'' When I seem hesitant, my colleague who teaches the class butters me up by saying that these future teachers should be exposed to my organized delivery. (Does this mean how I say it is more important than what I say?) After five minutes in front of the class I sometimes wonder if these students even care whether I am organized or not. But like most teachers of speech communication I keep accepting the invitation and usually enjoy the opportunity to spout off to these future educators or to any group who will listen. After hours of preparation I sometimes wonder what, if anything, they will remember from my annual inspirational message. I have decided my best bit of advice can be boiled down to three words: “Be a professional."
