Abstract

The Back to Basics movement that appears to be sweeping parent-teachers associations and school boards, if not school systems, presents those of us in speech communication with both a threat and an opportunity. If, as in many communities, the “basics” are assumed to be synonymous with the three R's, the curricular and extracurricular speech communication programs in our schools are in danger. Since they are not “basic,” they are frills, easily dispensable so that more time and support can be given to reading, writing, arithmetic, and other fundamental, “academic” subjects. This would not be the first time in the history of education that speech communication has been treated this way.
