Abstract
Teachers of speech, even more perhaps than teachers in other field, occasionally need to stop and take stock. What, after all, is this subject or discipline that we profess? On what basis does its claim to independence rest? What is the proper business of a department of speech? What, ideally, should the study of speech entail? What areas of investigation and research are our special property? In what ways does training in speech contribute to a liberal education?
