Abstract

Staff development is an issue which can make or break the educational impact of technology, especially computers, in our schools (Costello, 1997). Literature suggests that the role of technology in our schools is evolving faster than university students can complete the course of study to become educators (Glennan and Melmed, 1996). A staff who has been given the opportunity to train and implement technology can increase the potential of all learners. It is necessary to provide initial and continuous training and support for educators in school districts that have made technology an integral aspect for the learning experience (McGrath, 1998). There are many questions concerning the process of designing staff development, training, and support for computer use in education. This paper examines three educational questions suggested by Dr. Thomas Berg, a professor at the University of Northern Iowa (personal communication, September 1991):

1. What is the nature of the learner?

2. What should be taught/learned?

3. How should we teach that which should be taught/learned?

By addressing adaptations of these pedagogical questions, the designer of any staff development will be able to organize information better, create a more effective plan, and foster greater comfort with and integration of technology in the classroom.
