Abstract

Eliminating manufacturing waste can be accomplished by following Lean methodology. Lean methodology, a management tool for optimizing workflow, has been adopted for use within the household and across all different types of companies worldwide. This paper discusses Lean methodology techniques — such as pure waste reduction using Kaizen events and the TIM WOOD acronym (Transport, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Overproduction, Over-processing, Defects). Lean concepts can be used in companies such as animal vaccine manufacturing to slim costs by eliminating waste in order to stay competitive in the market. In addition to an overview of Lean techniques, this paper provides a practical example that demonstrates a process flow for a before-and-after improvement of waste elimination using the TIM WOOD acronym. A data analysis of the time-studies and final results of this improvement are also provided. In addition, the paper offers a hypothesis test using statistical methods to demonstrate the potential waste-eliminating effects of Lean methodology on an animal vaccine manufacturing process.
