Abstract
Religion and politics are central to understanding life in the United States, both past and present. And yet, thinking critically about these two subjects, especially in relation to one another, is difficult. It can feel even more arduous to take up these topics in conversation with others or engage in a good-faith debate in public discourse. There are many reasons for this. Social norms insisting religion and politics are two subjects unfit for polite company endure in many homes and communities across the country. Also, the way scholars study the past has changed, and continues to change, which leaves many people uncertain about how to talk about these subjects. While there are, of course, enduring questions about, say, how “separation of church and state” came to be synonymous with American political and religious life, scholarly answers vary.
