Tribological Behavior of Graphene-Dispersed Emulsifier Cutting Fluid

Use of cutting fluids is unavoidable in manufacturing industries. Environmental concerns led to replacement of flood application with minimum quantity lubrication, which requires cutting fluids with enhanced cooling and lubricating properties. Graphene has good thermal conductivity as well as excellent lubricating properties. The present work investigates the tribological behavior of graphene-dispersed emulsifier oils, which are prepared with varying concentrations of graphene and surfactant. Their effect on the tribological behavior of base emulsifier cutting fluid is investigated. Coefficient of friction decreased with the increase in concentrations of graphene and also with the increase in concentration of surfactant Triton X 100. 0.5 wt% of graphene dispersed with 0.5 wt% of surfactant Triton X 100 in base emulsifier oil showed lowest coefficient of friction and scar area. Graphene formed a tribofilm between the sliding surfaces and helped in reducing friction.
