Abstract

The main influence on my graduate work has been the art of my native country of South Korea. A predominant feature of oriental paintings is black ink. I have always been intrigued by the balance of black and white elements which I associate with figure- and- ground in Western design theory. This intrigue has continued as my education has broadened into the field of graphic design. The opportunity to combine artistic intuition with technical computer- based media prompted me to study graphic design at the University of Northern Iowa beginning in 1996. It was my ambition to study a diversity of concepts in typographic communication and then eventually to create my own unique ideas, utilizing the advantage of having been educated in art in both the eastern and western hemispheres.
