Abstract

In this rapidly changing world children are engaged with problems of science, social studies, literature, and world events. Their interests have been widened by travel, radio, television, newspapers, and magazines. Their curiosities have been aroused by new experiences and they search for related facts. The textbook formerly occupied a central position in learning; but in the complex society of the present, neither a single textbook nor multiple texts are adequate to enable the school to fulfill its responsibility for the education of children. Not only does a modern educational program demand more informational materials than did the narrow "essentials" program of the past; it also makes greater attempts to serve the wide range of individual differences among children, requiring materials which are varied in content and in level of difficulty. "Reference materials, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and atlases, must be available and used intelligently in the upper grades."
