Abstract
The goal of education today is to provide an opportunity for each student to develop to the optimum. The task or guidance programs and their personnel is to facilitate this development and the accompanying adjustments of the students to their ever-changing needs and environment. Since this emphasis on the position of guidance in the schools is bec0ming more important each successive year, this has been an opportune time to investigate and evaluate progress in guidance programs on a state-wide basis. This study attempted to investigate guidance programs as they existed during the 1959-60 school year in Iowa high schools as to: (1) what the programs consisted of, (2) the personnel employed, (3) the use of tests, (4) the coordination with comparative program in junior high schools and elementary schools, (5) the needs for expansion and improvement to meet the requirements of the local situations, and (6) the practicing counselors' needs and desires as they stated them.
