Abstract

This document will discuss four examples of Classic Era wind composition, known as Harmoniemusik, and their performance on a Graduate Conducting recital in March, 1991 at the University of 1 Northern Iowa. This recital was presented as a part of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in Conducting. The history of Harmoniemusik and its medium, the wind octet, will be presented, describing its function, popularity, and patronage. The works to be examined are: Joseph Haydn's own arrangement of the second movement of his Symphony No. 100, "Military," for wind octet with additional trumpet, flute, and percussion; Josef Triebensee's arrangement of Haydn's Symphony No. 92, "Oxford," for wind octet; Antonio Salieri's Armonia per un Tempio de/la Notte for octet; and Mozart's own arrangement of his Serenade in B-Flat, K.370a, for octet. The history and individual circumstances surrounding these works will be discussed.
