Abstract

The purpose of this handbook, General Semantics at Work, is fourfold: (1) to encourage the teacher of high school English to place as much emphasis upon improving the language attitudes of his students as upon improving their language skills, on the theory that the attitudes will determine the ultimate quality of the skills; (2) to summarize the system of general semantics, which its originator, Alfred Korzybski, chooses to call "a discipline," because it not only explains but trains; (3) to discuss the nature of the three components of language attitudes; namely, (a) the language itself, the tool of the communication process, (b) man, the inventor and the manipulator of language, and (c) the world, the space/time environment in which man has his experiences and his verbal contacts; and (4) to suggest learning experiences which might be helpful to the teacher who is interested in using the principles of general semantics in his teaching.
