Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the academic performance of collegiate athletes to nonathletes and to examine the relationship between participation in collegiate athletics and selected variables used to measure academic success. Specific factors that were examined included: sex, state of residence, ACT score, numbers of credit hours carried per semester, grade point average per semester, cumulative grade point average, cumulative credit hours carried, and sport. A total of 126 students from the University of Northern Iowa served as subjects in this study, 62 athletes and 64 nonathletes. Data used to make comparisons between various groups of athletes and nonathletes were obtained from students' academic transcripts. Basic descriptive statistics as well as independent group t-tests were used to analyze selected variables. Statistical analysis revealed only one significant difference between all group comparisons at the .05 level. This significant difference occurred in the comparison of cumulative grade point averages between male athletes and female athletes. Results of the study led the investigator to conclude that there was no significant difference between the grade point average of athletes and nonathletes. It was also concluded that the variable, gender of athlete, had a significant influence on the academic performance of collegiate athletes.
