Teenagers--Sexual behavior--Namibia;

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, and sexual behavior among Namibian adolescents.

Data were collected by using a ~edified version of the Prevention Minimum Evaluation Data Set (PMEDS) instrument. The participants were 45 twelfth graders, of which 23 were females and 22 males.

Analysis of the data included an examination of intercorrelation between sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, and sexual behavior, and an investigation of gender differences among these three variables. Pearson correlations were calculated for each variable and t-tests were run to look for the gender difference. Multiple regression was also run to predict the level of sexual attitude and sexual knowledge.

The findings showed that a significant intercorrelation was found between sexual attitude and sexual knowledge at .01 level. As well as between sexual attitude and the use of contraceptives at the .05 level. Gender differences were found in sexual knowledge.

The multiple regression analysis showed significant correlation among sexual attitude, sexual knowledge, and gender.

Findings showed that sexual knowledge is closely related to sexual attitude and gender. Females seem to have higher level of sexual knowledge than their male counterparts. Furthermore, adolescents with higher sexual knowledge were more likely to display positive attitude toward sexuality. Implications of these findings are drawn for parents, teachers, and policy makers. Further research is needed to investigate different aspects of this subject.
